#87 Yeasayer

A late session, a band who had not really convinced me until then. And suddenly, an improvised party in the subway, an apartment, a piano, an incredible turmoil of events. Thanks, Yeasayer.

Yes, sometimes we get to shamble, half-motivated. It was one of these evenings: we could make a list of all the troubles we had with the equipment, organization, weariness, the Take away show scheduled after the show at the Nouveau Casino. Plus, the band kept us waiting and the tour manager refused to use the van...

However, two hours after, we left an apartment at Jourdain, exalted, light-headed, convinced that we lived one of the craziest, most free sessions of all the Take away shows... with a band I didn’t like.

When I saw them in Brooklyn, Yeasayer puzzled me, weird outfit, gimmicks from the 80s, crazy flights, it was all too much. When I listened to the record, it was worst: I couldn’t bear the layers, synthesizers, exaggerated reverberation. That evening, I hardly regretted missing the show, despite the amazed faces of those who were leaving the venue.

#87.1 - YEASAYER - NO NEED TO WORRY / REDCAVE

Réal : Vincent Moon

Tourné à Paris

The band left the Nouveau Casino. They were funny, mordant, at ease, blithe. We went round in circles a bit, and then were told we would not take the van. So, we decided to go to the subway at station Goncourt. Fans, friends, god knows who, they all came with us. We walked for a long time, so long that we almost forgot we were there to shoot. Ira, the bass player, was the last one to take the stairs and the band almost took us by surprise, going ahead, turning around and singing a capella.

It would be useless to carry on this description, I think the videos speak for themselves... Crazy songs on the subway, rising and reaching their climax at Jourdain, opening a six-pack, a long walk, the building with two codes, an entry phone, a secured elevator and eleven floors. And then, the piano, beer, songs, 2080’s lyrics written quick and dirty on a sheet of paper, Lyn relaxing on her hamac, hands, glasses, bottles clinking on the floor as if calling the neighbour’s bawling out. A joyful hippie communion.

#87.2 - YEASAYER - 2080 / TIGHTROPE

Réal : Vincent Moon

Tourné à Paris

And the songs. Their minimalism would be worth, more often, only the tictic noise on the beer bottles. As much strong, and beautiful. That evening, we talked Yeasayer into going wild but they went further, they dragged us. Yeasayer are fun.

it’s clear this man has realised some important truths that affect us all in life and the end of life. music is so great, something nice to express oneself; worries and happiness, without it, life would be so much shorter. very beautiful, so nice to have people whom are not totally familiar with one another produce something so pleasing and impacting. definetley enjoy where music is headed these days. nice to have depth again. peace and love.

These videos are great, especially 2080. The part where the whole apartment sings the two lines in the chorus is amazingly good, making it better than the rest, which is just really good.

Also, does anybody know where to find tightrope? I don’t think it’s on any of their cds or eps and I can’t find it anywhere except a couple of live shows and mp3 versions of the takeaway show; it is driving me crazy because that song sounds fantastic. I guess it might be on cd in the future?

If I could have been anywhere, at any point in history, it would be amongst that circle of friends, singing and clapping and loving Yeasayer freely. They are so under rated.

Magic.

What makes this video set such a favorite of mine is the unabashed humanness of it all. At several times throughout you can hear the disappointed "aw, do we have to?" skepticism of a tired band after a late show. What is this blogoteque thing again? Where are we going? We’re supposed to just sing and clap in the streets and the subway? But then, as if by magic, once their initial embarrassment fades, the creative spirit trumps human sheepishness and these beautiful songs emerge fully formed from nothing but the hands, souls, and throats of a handful of artists who clearly love their craft. Thank you Vincent, for capturing such fabulously vast array of emotions and moments for all to see and appreciate. I feel like I was there because of it, and these videos serve as the only reasons I gave Yeasayer a chance in the first place. I love them now.

RE : Yeasayer

i most definitely agree. blogotheque has made me listen, really listen, to so many musicians i breezed over days before. this site is a microscope to who all these wonderful talents really are, and how they impact the lives and world around them.

so very beautiful and uplifting. yeasayer makes life feel like one big party with lots of donkey games and hugs. they make me think "why am i at home slouched over my computer?" there’s one big spectacular world out there i can stir up and throw glitter on like a fairy in pink tights that are overly snug at the crotch. yay for yeasayer!
